Choosing the right size in barefoot footwear is essential to enjoy comfort, freedom of movement and health in your feet. An incorrect size can cause chafing, compressed fingers or discomfort when walking. In this easy guide we teach you how to measure your feet at home, what margin to consider and the most common mistakes when buying barefoot shoes.
Problem: why is choosing the wrong size so common?
Many people buy barefoot shoes using their usual size of normal sneakers, and after a short time they feel discomfort:
- Fingers touching the tip of the shoe
- Sliding heels, slipping...
- Fail of stability when walking
You don't have to be guided by the size you wear in conventional footwear, because in that footwear your foot is compressed and doesn't feel anything, and if you wear barefoot shoes you will feel everything. That's why the main mistake is to be guided by the size and not measuring the feet correctly or assuming that all shoe brands follow the same size. Each foot is unique and barefoot footwear requires a precise adjustment to allow freedom of movement without compromising safety.
How to measure the foot at home
Measuring your feet correctly is simple and you don't need professional tools. Follow these steps for accurate results:
Materials
- A4 size sheet of paper
- Pencil or pen
- Rule or tape measure
Steps to measure
- Place the sheet of paper on the floor against the wall.
- Rest your heel on the wall and stand up with all the weight on that foot.
- Mark the longest point of your finger with the pencil.
- Measures the distance from the wall to the mark. That distance is the measure of your foot.
- Repeat on both feet and use the measurement of the longest foot.
💡 Tip 1: always measure at the end of the day, when the feet are slightly more swollen, to ensure a comfortable fit.
💡 Tip 2: Use this same method to measure the width of the metatarsal, which is the widest area of the foot to know if the last of the footwear you are looking at will be good in width. In SHUU Barefoot we have two tres.
Recommended margin for barefoot footwear
Barefoot footwear should allow the fingers to move freely. It is recommended:
-
Length: add between 0'8 and 1'2cm to the length to the size of the foot. This is the ideal margin, but it will also depend on whether it is closed footwear or open sandal. In closed shoes I recommend a minimum margin of 0'8cm but in open sandals you could wear a margin of 0.5cm, if you feel comfortable, since the fingers go to the air.
-
Width: the shoe must be adjusted to the contour of the foot, but without lateral pressure. Our footwear, for example, gives more amplitude than the insole, being made with an iron sole and a very soft leather, the footwear gives way and adapts to the foot like a glove. Our BIG footwear is between 5-7mm more wide than the insole.
-
Instep volume: this measure is also important to take into account to know which models suit you best. To measure it, put your foot on the ground, take a measuring tape or a piece of thread (which you can then measure with a ruler) and turn the instep in the highest area, the whole turn also passing through the plant, because we need to know how much its entire contour measures as if it were a circumference.
This margin guarantees comfort and freedom of movement, preventing the foot from slipping or compressing inside the footwear.
Common mistakes when choosing the size
- Buy the usual size, without measuring the foot
- Measure only one foot. You have to measure both and always take into account the longest
- Ignore the width of the foot and the natural shape of the forefoot
- Measure sitting instead of standing. Always standing when measuring and trying them on.
- Do not consider the thickness of the sock you will use
